manual lymphatic drainage

Dr. Vodder Method

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialised treatment designed to support the body’s lymphatic system, a vital network involved in fluid balance, immune function and the removal of waste products from the tissues.

At Shipston Therapy Centre, this treatment is offered using the Dr. Vodder Method of Manual Lymphatic Drainage, a precise and widely recognised approach that uses light, rhythmic, circular movements to gently stimulate the natural flow of lymph fluid through the lymphatic vessels. MLD is deeply calming and may support swelling, fluid retention, tissue congestion, recovery and overall wellbeing.

By encouraging the body’s natural lymphatic flow it may help to reduce swelling, ease feelings of heaviness or congestion, and support the body’s own restorative processes. Because the technique is very light and rhythmic, it is also known for its calming effect on the nervous system, often helping the body settle into a more restful state.

  • feelings of tissue congestion or heaviness

  • recovery after injury or surgery, where medically appropriate

Lymphatic Drainage

what to expect

Before your first session, you will be asked to complete a short consultation form so your practitioner can understand your health history and any areas of swelling, discomfort or concern. At the start of each treatment, Linda will check in with you to understand your goals and how your body has been feeling, ensuring the session is tailored to your individual needs.

You will lie comfortably on a soft, heated treatment couch, supported with pillows and blankets to help your body fully relax. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is performed using very gentle, rhythmic movements on the skin, so you may be asked to wear loose clothing or uncover the area being treated while remaining appropriately draped.

Treatment begins at the neck, where the main lymphatic drainage points are located. This helps prepare the system and supports the safe movement of fluid through the body before working on specific areas such as the face, abdomen, arms or legs.

During a session, the focus is usually on one or two key areas, depending on your needs. The technique is light, slow and precise, gently stimulating the natural pumping action of the lymphatic vessels.

Many clients notice sensations such as warmth, subtle movement or a feeling of lightness as fluid begins to shift. The slow rhythm of the treatment can also be deeply calming, with some people drifting into a relaxed or meditative state.

After treatment, you may be encouraged to drink water and allow time for rest. Some people notice increased urination or mild tiredness as the body processes the movement of fluid.

Some clients benefit from a single session, while others find a short course of treatments provides more lasting support. For ongoing concerns, sessions may be spaced weekly or fortnightly, followed by occasional maintenance.
